water change and stirring gravel cause bleaching of sps.
years ago i posted a thread about doing water changes with gravel cleaning tubs like phython. i had noticed that when did a water change and the gravel got stirred up the next day i had some corals bleach.
that was years ago.. my new system has a large phlenum outside of the main tank so no gravel issues. however last week i did siphon the gravel in the tank that is merely to cover up the bottom.. now the bleaching started again in some corals... some of the stags went to a tan color and then next day bleached out .... didnt lose the whole had just some branches.. so i am again wondering if anyone has seen this happen to their sps have had issues after water changes and if so.. was the gravel cleaned hard.

it disturbs allot of bacteria and you get a mini cycle and could be a large cycle depending on how much disturbance there is. back in my earlier yrs when i was breeding FW angels my dad came over one day and was gonna be helpful and 'clean' all my tanks, i came home to dead fish

this was a small area.. not used for nitrification or anything.. my thought is that bacteria is released from the gravel and the sps have issues with some strains..

could well be, i know you can have problems dosing to much ZEObac in a ZEOvit system, it leads to browning, it seams logical other strains could cause bleaching.

I have good new on this? I am so confused as to why people have issues with acros? I have my hands in the tank all the time, siphon the sand all the time, my clown stirs the sand, my alk is 12.5 Dkh, and I have NO issues at all. My corals are happy and growing. Perhaps it's what they get used to? I have cyano and that's why I siphon the sand a lot....nothing happens the next day, ever...for a year. Maybe it's because I have aquacultured acro's? Good luck, I really don't understand all these issues people have but perhaps my time is coming?
