stocking plan for 20 gal
Hi, I am new to saltwater
I have a 20 gal high, tank with a remora protein skimmer, 2 inches of live rock, and 40 lbs of live rock. I am looking at a false clown without an anemone, and a sixline wrasse. I would also perfer a purple firefish or royal gramma. What would be better for me? I would also appreciate any other stocking plans. Thank You |

The clown is an excellent idea. You can get a torch or frogspawn coral and the clown could host that and they are easier to care for than anenomes.
Purple Firefish is another great pick, colorful and well suited for this tank but they are jumpers so cover the top of your tank. Both the Sixline Wrasse and Royal Gramma are known for aggression in nano's. I wouldn't mix either with a Firefish (You will never see the firefish as it will have to hide in the rocks) and I wouldn't mix the Sixline with the Gramma as the Sixline would probably bully the gramma. If you have to get a Sixline then get a tankmate that can handle the aggression, a Blenny (Like the BiColor) or a sand sifting goby (Yellow Watchman Goby) would work. Another option is the Blackcap Basslett, same family as the Royal Gramma and very peaceful and colorful, I have one in my nano. You could have a firefish with the Blackcap without problems or you could mix the Blackcap with a small flasher wrasse like the McKosker or Carpenters Flasher Wrasse. Hope that helps....

I would go for a pair of clowns, they are much happier when they have another and will be alot more entertaining for you.
Firefish (purple goby or orange goby) are excellent choice. They do jump and will fight with your clowns initially but will settle themselves down pretty quickly. I would also look at a cleaner shrimp or a coral banded shrimp. Awesome peaceful creatures that help clean the tank up. We have an RSM with 2x O.Clowns, 1 Purple Firefish, 1 Large CBS and a Black Mollie and they live happily together. Very colorful. We are adding a Coral Beauty, but be aware these may not be coral safe HTH. Zaita. |

Torches can come in better looking colors, in my opinion.
Here's a pic of mine: Frogspawn all look the same, usually green with purple tips (which if you like that color then that's great).

Or, to confuse you even more, you could go with a hammer. Here's mine :
Its neon green and hasn't shown any signs of aggression to neighboring corals as of yet.

Thanks for the help on the choice of corals
Do you think any other stocking plan would be fine for my tank. Any suggestions welcomed. |

Would there be any stocking plans that could
include the Six line Wrasse? Would there be any special requirements needed for the clowns or Firefish? Any Ideas welcomed. |

Six line wrasse are a variable bunch. Some nice, some not so nice.
I would recommend you listen to your father and go light on the stocking plans. One clown and a fire fish. |

I would definitley get the pair of clowns, and one other fish Either a purple firefish, a blenny, a goby ( which you could also get a goby paired with a pistol shrimp), a black cap basslet, or a smaller wrasse. The sixlines are very active, and might wind up showing a little more aggression in a smaller tank.
As far as the shrimp a skunk(scarlet) cleaner shrimp is more active, and will be out and about all the time. A coral banded is a litttle more reclusive, and might hide out during the day. If you want something a little more active I would get the Skunk cleaner. Some other things you can add are snails, hermit crabs, an emerald crab, and some low light corals. Like mushrooms, different polyps, hammer, frogspawn, or torch coral. My clowns love my frogspawn, and hammer.

I had a sixline and a royal gramma in a 10g for 2 years with no aggression from either, ever. Just my experience. I would say that clowns can be more aggressive than a sixline in small quarters.

Petoonia - Do you spot feed it? If not just use a turkey baster and shoot some mysis or brine into the tentacles. Mine has grown a little but I am in the opposite boat as you, I just have a nano and want it as small as possible so I don't spot feed.

I do try to spot feed it, probably not as often as I should. I guess I'll try to feed it more often. What kind of light, and flow is yours getting?
