I can't tell enough about the snail from your pic to ID it, but if you can catch it and photograph it in a dish, or even take some (larger) photos of it with more than half the shell exposed, I can probably ID it. From your pic, it looks like it has a rounded spire with dark blotches, which may either be on the shell or may be parts of the animal seen though a transparent shell. Looks like it may be a marginellid, but hard to say from that pic.

Cheers,

Don

Many thanks - I'll try and get a better picture the next time it comes out of hiding.

Here are some more pictures.

Still not perfect but we need a new digital camera.

It doesn't look like a marginellid (picture: http://www.andrewjmartinez.com/collection/001901.jpg)

Many thanks for your help

Yeah, it's not a marginellid. It's either a trochid or a turbinid, and it looks to be a Trochus species. If it's a turbinid, it will have an operculum made of shell material. If it's a trochid, the operculum will be a transparent yellow disc. Either way, it's a nice guy, and will be a beneficial algae grazer.

Cheers,

Don
