Filtration
Hello,
I have a beginner question, I’ve been reading the posts on this site and a couple others and I must say I am totally confused. I have a 55 gal tank I’d like to convert to saltwater. I’m planning on about 3 in of LS and 80 lbs of LR. I’ll have 2 power heads and a protein skimmer. I would like to have some corals (leather and/or mushroom) some invertebrates (stars, scallops, clams, shrimp) and 4 or 5 fish (blenny, goby, clownfish, cardinal). I only mentioned these specifically as an example of what I’d like. I’m confused or the filtration for this tank. I’ve read that I wouldn’t need anything else, I should use a sump, I should use a trickle filter or I could use a canister filter. I am a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. method. Any and all advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Vicki |

A sump is basically a way to add water volume and house some of the bulky equipment like skimmers and return pumps. For a reef setup, I would use a refugium which you add some good algae to help filter the water.
