Bare Bottom tank in FOWLR
I understand that bare bottom tanks are used primarily in Reef Tanks to keep any and all detritus suspended and out to the overflow, then down to your sump. Are they done in FOWLR tanks? I really like the look of them, but I know that in many tanks the live sand plays an active part in the filtration of the tank. This might be a dumb question, but I was just wondering.

It's not a dumb question
You can do BB no matter what you put in the tank provided it doesn't like to live in the sand. |

I guess my question is; is there any cons to doing a FOWLR tank as a barebottom rather than sand base. Also, I guess the big thing is that you need tons of flow in order for a barebottom tank to really work correct? I read something that you need to even elevate your live rock so that it is not laying directly on your starboard (or whatever you are using.)

Lots of people in the fish only forum have bare bottoms. It works out nice as long as your not interested animals that require sand. The other exception is eels as the sand is a nice way to cover up the tubes.
