Refugium help

Hello,

I am in the process of upgrading to a larger tank. It is a used tank and has a canister filter, no sump or wet/dry. My question is how can I setup a refugium. Would a hang on back be my best option? The tank doesnt have a built in overflow. The only reason I want a fuge is so that I can have plenty of food for mandarins that I plan on getting once this tank is setup.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

how large is the tank?

Is it glass or acrylic?

if the tank is large, you might want to pay the cost to get it drilled so that you can install a proper sump and refugium system. smaller systems probably ok with HOB.

I am doing a refugium sump in my tank, but not completely sure about the layout of the baffles yet.

Type refugium in google then look at the images. Not all your answers but does show a few with ideas how they work and helps deciding the route you want to go.

HOB is one option. Save yourself some money. Build your own. Lots of plans, here (DIY forum). Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I am not handy in any sense of the word, so not sure about the whole DIY. The tank is a 90 gallon and I would really only be using the refugium to maintain a steady amount of pods for mandarins that I plan on getting. Drilling the tank isnt really an option either because I am adopting all of the livestock that is currently in the tank.

Anymore ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Or if you know of anyone who is selling a used overflow/prefilter let me know too!

Thanks!

in terms of growing copepods... can anybody provide some useful tips?

Do most people just fill it with pods once, and they breed pretty much forever, or do you end up having to add insects alot? Is macroalgae the primary food source, or do you need to feed your bugs?

Also, what is a good list of things that should be added to a refugium to feed a mandarin? I know copepods are easy, but what about hatching brine shrimp? Do they mix well, can brine shrimp reproduce continually or do you need to hatch from store-bought eggs usually?
