Question RO / DI System all the info you can give.

I'm thinking of an RO system. Right now I get RO for $.65 a gal from LFS (local food store). My guestions are... is there alot of waste water, can it be hooked up to basement wash sink and do I need a plumber? Looking at units in some of the threads it seems complicated. Is it? I do pay for local tap water also. I don't want to throw away 4 gal of waste water for 1 gal of good RO water.

my ro/di is 4-1 waste to good water most are that way and most ro/di hook right up to your sink they are very easy to run make sure you get one with a pressure gauge

Go RO/DI as opposed to just RO. Yes, a 4:1 waste/product ratio is what you are looking at, yes it can be hooked up to a basement wash sink, no you do not need a plumber, it is easy, just need a fitting/adapter or 2 and a wrench. You can come up with uses for the waste water, such as using it to fill your washing machine, using it to water plants, ect. but the waste is a necessity due to how a RO membrane functions.

As far as the cost of the waste, it's not as bad as you think- at least where I am. Between water changes/top off and RO waste, I use about 1250 gallons a month- which costs me about $3.50

If your unit is next to a washing machine, get one of those Y valves to split off from your COLD water line. Then just buy the converter from 3/4" MPT to pressure line. Took me 10 min. to install and another 5 to make sure there were no leaks. Stuck the drain line down the same drain as my washing machine. Also, take a look into getting a Y valve with on/off capabilities.
