Pulsing Xenia....Quick Question

Today I got a frag of pulsing xenia from my lfs (5 bucks)...was that a decent price?

More importantly, it is has been in the tank for about 4 hours and is pulsing away, but it isnt totally opened up. Is this normal since I just put it in there or should I be worried?

Yes, it was a good price, but watch out. This stuff is invasive. Keep it away from anything it can climb on. Better yet, relegate it to the sump or refuge. It is pretty but soon you will be cursing the day you put it in your tank.

Behavior is probably normal.

It probably will take a few light cycles to get normal . And whoever said that they grow like mad is so right. I bought a really tiny stalk of that thing, and now one of my live rock is fully covered in that stuff.

Gotta love the smell.lol
Just keep it to a lone rock away from anything else.
It's easy enough to peel off the glass if it grows there.
And if a piece breaks free get it out or tooth pick it back down
where your have it contained. It will grow wherever it lands.
Strange, but some hobbiest have trouble keeping xenia.

yeah, i had it in my 37g, and i HATED it. it took over everything. i had it on the sandbed and it spread to the rocks even though it was nowhere near them because i knew it would spread. just keep an eye on it if you don't want it to spread. btw, if it does spread you could always frag it because there will be a lot to frag eventually and you could make your $5 back and then some.

I think it would take a few days to fully open regularly. IT's pretty normal for most corals. $5 is a good price. I started out with 2 stalks. Now I have about 18 in my tank! They split fast. Some people like them, some don't, but if you do start to get annoyed with their growth, frag them and make $5 a stalk (just like you paid). You should be able to see the oppertunity for profit with Xenia in just a couple of months

I personally like the pom pom xenia. I started with one little piece and now have it all over the place. If it starts to shade other corals just frag it from the rock and attach with a rubber band to a piece of rubble and take it to get some store credit. More than likely it will start pulsing soon if it is not being blown directly by a power head.

I bought a whole bunch about three week ago from a reefer online. When I took it out of the box, they look healthy. I glued it to several pieces of rocks and aclimated it before putting it in the tank. It was ok for the first day or two, then started to MELTS and within a few days after that, completely disappear. I have no idea what went wrong.
