upgrading/moving tank and a sand question

So I am in the process of moving out of my parents house, and well I need to move my tank. I have a 37g that is set up and I have a 72 bow that I am upgrading to. I need the 37 out of my parents house ASAP. Is there anyway to just move the LR/sand (dsb) to the 72 without causing a cycle?

Also, I have spent most of my budget on the new tank/stand and it looks like the rest of it is going towards more lighting, is it ok to use the play sand that is sold at home depot for the bottom layer of sand?

Thanks,

-Stew

You can most likely count on some sort of cycle. If I were you I would siphon out the water into 5 gallon buckets filling then halfway. Fill the rest of the way with the LR. Keep it submerged to prevent as much die-off as possible, then transport it. The sand is another story. When the sand bed is disturbed it will draw up a lot of crud. I have no good ideas here, I would just scoop it up and go. It is what it is.

I do not have any experience with playsand substrates so someone else will havew to throw you a bone there.

Good Luck --landlord

I just recently moved a 120 Gallon tank with no noticable cycle.

I half filled about 10 medium sized rubbermaid containers with water from the display, then filled each with live rock.

I drained all the remaining water from the display tank except for approximately 1 inch on top of the sand. The tank was heavy, but managable with two helpers.

Since all the rock and the sand remained covered with water, i got no die-off and no cycle after setting it up the following day. That's right, I left the rock in the water containers overnight with no problems.

I'd not suggest play sand.
