Invert List for Tank
Okay,
So my new 42 Hex is almost completely stocked with coral. I still have plenty of room in there for a few more corals which i'll be getting soon. Anyways i am looking to fill this thing with interesting inverts to make the tank just a little bit cooler to look at it. Here is a list of things i was planning on adding. http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 I would like to get about 3 or 4 of these. http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...ot_parent_id=4 Plus a lot of clams (5-6 total, crocea, derasa, Maxima, Squamosa) Any objections with the list i have?

We will need to see some pictures. I like the idea of a hex as it can be viewed from all sides.. I am new to the hobby but I have asked about getting several things on your list and this is what I have been told.. Let me know if you know any different as I woul'nt mind getting a Starfish also..
1. Cucumbers - Ok 2. Feather Duster - Ok 3. Lobster - No - Could kill slower moving fish and others 4.Flame Scallops - No - They will starve lots of maintenance 5. Urchine - No will knock everything over 6. Urchine - No 7. Starfish - No - Needs an astablished tank with sponge or will starve.

Well i am by no means an expert but a lot of things people have said no to on your list i have had more than one LFS tell me yes. All of the stores i frequent are highly respected on here so i know that people know that the owners are educated.
Lobster- the only thing i have heard is that they tend to be hiding most of the time and have a tendency to eat sleeping fish. Basically its like a bristle starfish to me. Other than that they are fairly easy to keep. Scallops- I have kept many and they are all short lived in the home aquaria wether they are in a perfect enviroment or not. There life span is only about a year. If you can keep a clam you should be able to keep a scallop IMO. Urchins- I have heard more than one person tell me that as they get bigger they can act as bull dozers unitentionally. That's why i chose smaller ones verses long spines and pencil urchins. Starfish- I have also heard that if you do not add them to an established tank that they too will parish but all of my LR is cured and i have sponges growing on a lot of my rock. So figured that i could get away with one. As for fish i may put one fish in there two tops and thats it. This tank was meant for coral and inverts. This was my plan from the get go. Thanks for the reply.

I have a rock boring urchin in my tank for a year and hasn't bothered or nocked over anything, however, it might be because the rock boring urchins are small ones I think they get no bigger than 2 or 3 inches.

Hey Nick
I have Urchins in my tank with no problem other than they eat that coraline algae as well as the other stuff. Starfish are fine as long as the tank is not new and by new I would have to say less than a year. The lobster is something I have not tried but I think I might. If he can take down the fish in my tank then he would be the best American Gladiator that ever was. I would think about adding a sally light foot maybe for some speed in the tank those things are allways on the go and are fun and cool to watch. Kevin

I ordered my stuff yesterday through fosters and smith (theres 300 dollars gone in a flash). I should have my stuff by Saturday afternoon. I broke down and decided to put fish in the tank. Nothing big just a court jester goby and two twin spot gobies. Basically just to add some movement in the tank since the shrimp will mainly hide most of the day.

I have also steered away from urchins, due to their reputation of knocking things over. I admit I due not glue things together in my reef. Stars... I have never had an issue other than the consumption of any of my shrimp. Although I believe the real culprit was my Flame Hawk fish and molting shrimp. I will have to look into urchin options.

I got a royal tuxedo urchin on the way and i am going to get a long spine from Sea Schor today. If they knock stuff over i will just have to try and find a way to strap it down so that they can't knock it over. Worse case scenario it goes in the 210. Thats what i love most about this new tank. If things get to big for it i hae a nice big home for it right next door.

Hey Nick, the Urchin is cool, I had one...Mine never knocked anything over but it did take everything with it. Anything that was around the same size or smaller would get stuck to it and the stupid thing would drag it with him where ever it went. I finally had to get rid of it because I constantly had to pick stuff off him. Make sure everything is secure, its kind of funny at first and then gets really annoying.

This is one I had, you can see on the top that stuff just sticks to it and this was AFTER I cleaned him really good.

I'll turn mine into a frag holder. He can keep my SPS frags on him. Can't wait.
