noisy water into tank

I have a 55 gal tank with a pre-drilled overflow in the corner. Before water enters the display it passes an "L" shaped pvc that has a hole drilled in it to break the siphon back to my sump should I lose power. There is a lot of noise coming from the hole drilled in this "L" pvc. Any ideas on how to reduce the noise?

Put a small piece of air tubing going from it to the surface. Then the water wont fall far enough to make noise.

Actually, it seems as if the noise is coming as the water passes through the pipe and over the hole. When I put my finger over the hole , the sound decreases a lot.

Is water coming out of the hole? Mine had water shooting out. So I put a little sponge under it, and it is now silent.

There's no water coming out of the hole, just passing by the hole very quickly. I was thinking of stuffing it with something porous like a spong or filter media, but I'm not sure if I'll lose the anti-siphoning property of the hole if I do that.

Absolutely no need for drilled holes if you keep the return close to the surface. Once the end of the return is exposed to air you have the best antisiphon device available, an air gap. As long as you always maintain sufficient room in the sump to contain that slight amount of backflow you will never have a flood. Drilled holes are a PITA and like check valves will fail eventually, usually when you are not home if Murphy has a say in it!
