Suggestions for better Mechanical filtration

I have an Ocean 180 gallon with overfows in the back corners. The 1" pvc drain pipes use a sponge for pre-filtering. I replaced the sponges in favor of using 100 micron filter pad which I placed in the drawer of my Kent Bio Rocker sump. This drawer is approximately 10" x 10" and is the only mechanical filter I have other than my skimmer (ETSS 600 w/Mag 12 pump).

Problem: Every 24 hrs I must rinse the filter pad because it clogs up. Any suggestions for a better way?
