newbie
So I got this 40 gallon tank with base from a friend that was getting rid of stuff before she moved. She also gave me a pump, heater, and a remora aquaC skimmer. I want to start on a salt-water tank but I have no clue where to start. I did a little reading and researching online. I went to a local store and they gave me so much information on "cycling the tank" that I got lost during the conversation. And it seemed like the owner was trying to convince me to buy a lot of stuff that I probably didn't need. Where can I get "live" rock for cheap? The owner was selling rocks for $8 a lb. Is that a decent price? If not, can someone please tell me where to buy rocks for cheap? I live in the Hollywood area. If anyone can help me find stuff to add to my tank before I start adding fish, I will greatly appreciate it. Or if you have equipment you no longer have use for that you would like to donate or sell to me, that would be awesome. Thanks.

Well 8 dollars a lbs is expensive to me. If you go on craigslist or recyler you can usually find people selling live rock for around 2 or 3 dollars a lbs. You can also get live sand and equipment for cheap to. I saved 150 bucks on just sand and rock buying it from a guy tearing down his tank. It can also be better because if it is established it will have corraline algae, worms and a bunch of critters that newly cured rock wouldnt. Good luck with the setup.

THe aqua c is awsome. $8 a pound is crazy expensive. Thats what my lfs charges, they are the only salt store in my town though. I'm pretty sure you can find a good price on LR in Hollywood. You might try Vivid aquariums in San Fernando valley Their rock ranges from $3-6 per pound which is average. They have very nice livestock, but Ive never ordered LR from them. Premium aquatics has the best rock I have found, but you would have to pay shipping. If I were you I would Buy about 50 lbs of cured or uncured live rock. Run your skimmer and some carbon for a few weeks. Then do a 50% water change. Test for nitrates once theyre at 0ppm your tank is cycled and you can begin adding livestock.

jbareng,
To Reef Central Check out the Southern California Reefers forum, people are always getting rid of LR. You should also look into MASLAC and see if a club interests you. Plenty of free information here without anyone trying to sell you a bunch of stuff
