My first coral (pics)
Okay, so I finally got a coral. It is a branching frogspawn. Or at least that is what I think it is. The LFS called it Octopus, but I think that is just another name for frogspawn. However, Melev's site has them as different corals. To make things more confusing, the Internet seems to mix up branching (Euphyllia paradivisa) and non-branching (Euphyllia divisa) frogspawn. My thoughts are that it seems to be Euphyllia paradivisa, could someone please confirm this (or tell me otherwise)?
Thank you. |

Green tipped branching frogspawn. Very nice coral, I have one too. Hardy and looks great under actinics. Very nice looking colony you have.

It seems to be happy. I think it is out a little more than when I took the pictures. |

Sounds like a good deal to me, lets see some wider shots of the tank!

If it is happy, they can really extend out. When the lights are out they will retract alot. They are a tough coral to frag as in strong. Take the branch and cut or snap it off like a wish bone.

The shot makes my tank look like a bowfront, but that is just the lens (I didn't edit the pic). The shot does not show my new wrasse, so here he/she is (sorry the pictures are not more clear, it has been hiding on and off so I have not had time to get a really good shot). |

What type of lighting are you running? I see you have T5's of some sort. I would seriously think about lowering that guy if they are HO T5's with individual reflectors. The closer to the bottom the better in that case. Mine are sitting on the bottom of the tank.

frogspawn, although octospawn look NEARLY identical. Very easy to get them crossed.

If it is getting too much light it will start to bleach and will not open fully. IME these corals are good indicators of tank conditions if positioned correctly. If at some point they are not opening as fully as they did there is possibly something amiss with your water chemistry.
The coral was probably not at the LFS long enough to show stress from the MH there unless it was a frag that has been raised by them. I would start the coral out lower if it were me.

Nice setup you have, Im a big fan of the less rock look. Thats the fun of this hobby, wondering what you are going to buy next.

Yet another great thing about a sump setup is that I still have 100 lbs of LR, and I can pull a piece up any time I want to. For comparison, here is my original setup: Then I decided to open up the middle and have large pile on the ends. This was not good for flow, and I got tired of the look: |

I don't think you will have an issue with too little light if you are running T5's. What you will have an issue with is too much light. If it isn't getting enough light it will just open more fully. Mine are on the glass (bb tank) and don't seem to mind one bit.

Okay I moved it down. The water is still a little cloudy from the move and it is starting to come out now. The picture was taken right after the move, so it is not really out much. On a side note, my wrasse seems to be doing well and is out more today.
