Can bubble algae growth split a coral?

A candy cane coral that has been growing spectacularly in my tank just had a branch split and fall off. Stuck to it was a large misshapen bubble algae.
I am pretty sure the pressure from the growing bubble split the coral.

Impossible?

Mmmmmmmaybe?

What do you think?
