Have you ever put anything between your stand and the carpet?
I have a 30g tank that I have been running for awhile, and during water changes, etc, I sometimes spill water on the carpet.
I was about to put up a new 75g tank and thought about putting a roll of that firm plastic that you roll office chairs on that protects the carpet, under the stand, with about 8-10 inches of plastic sticking out on all sides of the stand.. I thought it might help catch some drips and spilt water around the stand. The only negative I could think of is that in time, the plastic would get old and weak and crack, making it look unsightly, and secondly I was worried that the sheer weight of the tank and stand on it would bow up the plastic all around the bottom of the stand from the weight on it. Anyone think of anything good to catch water that drips on the carpet when cleaning, water changes, or simply moving a coral around and getting your wet hand out of the tank? My other thought is just to buy about 3 of those waterproof mats that they sell on Drs. F and S and put them all around the tank anytime I work on it, and remove them when I am done..... |

I throw down a blue tarp in front of my tanks sometimes while doing maintenance. Never had anything under the stand though.

I have a stack of towels that are strictly for tank use. I dont use the house towels and the household doesnt use my fish towels. Get some and lay down a few doubled over on the floor. It makes an easy, quick clean up.

Don't use the plastic piece that goes under an office chair. They crack and break, even when under an office chair. When used under an office chair they last about 2 years. Under a 75G tank, my guess is that it would crack within a week. Just put a small throw rug in front of the tank stand.

Foster and Smith have some very nice "Drymate Aquarium Cleaning Mat" drop cloth type mats. These things will absorb almost a gallon of water with out getting anything on the carpet. Highly reccomended for those who have wives.
