new tank plan
well at first I was going for a reef setup, but after looking into anemones I really liked them so.....
first question is where can you find a pair of maroons and will they host a BTA? second question other than those I planned on having some snails and hermits in the tank.... what else could I put with these.... I havn't looked into compatibility with these at all yet and I am just wondering..... could I add some sort of dwarf angel or lion fish.... any suggestions on colorful interesting fish would be nice.... this will not be happening for another few months, I am just looking for an idea on what I can have in my tank with these..... |

snails and hermits are not a good mix--the hermits destroy the snails for their shells or just do it because they are genetically programed to do so.
There is no guarantee that a maroon will host a BTA I would not add a lion fish to a reef tank A dwarf angel would be fine--but generally only one dwarf in a tank can be tolerated ---the flame angel is very nice so is a coral beauty

The Lionfish will "host" your Maroons quite nicely...
By the sound of it, you are just starting and by asking before buying you are already on the right track. Spend the next few months researching what you want to do and when you're ready to make the purchase, you'll be armed with valuable knowledge.

Yes clowns should host in any anemone. If you but two clowns, make sure that one is bigger than the other (that one will turn female). Dwarf angel should be fine...the two that capn suggested are great. Just know for the future that some angels are known to nip at corals (if you decide to add some down the road). Avoid the lion, he will eat your clowns. Also anemones are best avoided in a new tank (i.e. one less than a year old). Reguardless of what the guys at the LFS tell you, you don't need an anemone to have clowns.

not trying to be rude and thanks for info, but I know about everything you told me=] other than wasn't sure if a lion would eat a maroon seeing as they are pretty aggressive... and i heard its hard to pair maroons? my LFS actually has people that are very good with saltwater and told me about anemones, their lighting, watching out with corals, waiting for an established tank, etc... i can always trust what they say is true...

Sorry James. Wasn't trying to belittle you, just didn't know what your knowledge base was. That's great that you have a LFS that you trust...that can be very valuable. Many of the ones that I have ran into had much less knowledge about things than I would have thought.
LovinDaReef, Yes clowns change sex from male to female as they get older and as conditions warrant. If you ever see a reef tank with several of the same species of clowns, the big one (and only one) is the female; the little ones are her harem of males. Eric

You're very lucky James. I only have one part time employee at one of the LFS that I frequent that I feel I can trust. She will practically quiz you about a fish or invert before she will sell it to you. She definitely is more worried about the animal than making a buck. Very rare around me.

Gobies are nice, they have lots of personality and fun to watch. I hear they prefer deep sand beds, and an established pod colony.

i have a mated pair of maroon clowns hosted to a BTA that split in my tank. Now they are hosted to both the BTA.
I also keep a dwarf lion in the tank as well and they seem to not be bothered by each other at all. Not even at night when the lion fish goes swimming around. maybe a regular lionfish would be an issue, but not a dwarf, especially if they are hosted to an anemone. |

I'll have to read more about that then... because I have always loved lionfish and wouldn't really care about size just don't want it to kill everything = D

dwarf lion will be fine, as long as the maroons have a nem and are bigger than what can fit in the lion's mouth you'll surley be fine.
I've had mine for almost over a year now. |
