how does a calcium reactor work?

CO2 lowers the pH of the water in the reactor allowing the reactor media (coral skeletons) to dissolve. The minerals from the dissolving coral skeleton are used by the living corals in your tank to continue to build there own skeletal structures.

woz9683 not to get off subject but do u really have an octopus????
but on the calc reactor are they really needed for FOWLR tanks? i dose kalk here and there
