Not finished yet but couldn't wait to post photos

Stand for my new 90gal.

I still need to make the raised panel doors and do a final sand and finish. I just couldn't wait to show some pictures.

2x4 frame skinned with 3/4 plywood and walnut veneer. The pillasters and trim is all solid walnut.

Haven't designed a canopy yet but I want to get the tank up and running.

Dave

Nice looking stand. Where did you find walnut veneer plywood?

One of the best I have ever seen! Is the center removable so you can slide a Sump under?

I actually ordered 1/4 inch walnut plywood and glued that over the 3/4 cabinet ply. So I now have 1" plywood. I ordered the walnut plywood online from www.woodnshop.com. I have since found that my Home Depot (Painted Post) can special order it. The last quote I got was about $85 for 1/4 1 sided and $130 for 3/4 2 sides walnut.

I must admit that I did not make the pilasters. I bought a column from www.osbornewood.com and ran it through the table saw to split it into two pilasters.

http://www.osbornewood.com/product/1456.cfm

I did shape all the moldings on a router table and plan to make raised panel doors. If I wanted to make it out of oak I would have used all stock moldings and bought the doors premade.

But I HAD to have walnut.

No. I plan on having the sump in my basement so it just has a few large holes for the plumbing to pass through. I made some holes in the back to get wires in for lights and powerheads. I also made those hole big enough to add a closed loop pump in the base if I ever chose to add one.

That is just amazing!

Is that the natural color of the walnut?

On a piece of furniture like this I would usually use a brush on lacquer but because of the water situation I will most likely use a high quality varnish. Either a standard polyurethane varnish or a good old fashion phenolic and tung oil varnish like Waterlox. The only problem with Waterlox is the true cure time. Even though you can use the piece after 24-48 hours of curing it really doesn't set for several weeks. I will most likely use an oil base polyurethane. A a base coat of dewaxed orange shellac will give the walnut a slightly reddish color. Not sure if I will go in that direction. Under poly you have to use dewaxed shellac or the poly will not bound. It is tough to find dewaxed orange shellac. Dewaxed clear is easy to find. If I was using Waterlox shellac with wax is OK because the phenolic resins in Waterlox will bound to the wax.

Yes, it will darken quite a bit with some oil based varnish. Water based varnishes (which are just as good as oil base) will not change the color of the wood at all. I will use an oil base varnish, mos likely a simple polyurethane. It will be a darker, richer brown under the poly.
