Will this work and not be noisy?
Just mocked up a drain for my tank and I want to ensure this will work and not make alot of noise. The bulkhead fitting for the drains are 1" and I am using 1 1/4" PVC for the drains. The plumbing to the sump is not complete yet as I may need to change it based upon input from the experts. This shows just one side of the tank. I received the tank drilled and my choices are limited. I suppose the only other option I have is to make overflows and place them in the tank.

I have the strainers that come with the bulkheads, I just removed them to clarify the pictures a little more. Will the inverted elbosw work inside the tank or should they be turned down and drilled for a siphon break?

i dont know why you added the elbow in the tank. thats gonna create more noise with teh water falling and the air slurping as it falls with teh water. i just use a straight hole in the side of the tank. it does make noise but to coushin the fall of the water my brother used a 45 angled up so that the water more or less flowed over the edge rather than falling. another way might to be to angle the elbow at a 45 down into the water. what ever you do, once its filled with water just toy with it and see what works best for you.
good luck -Paul |

I would build an overflow box around those drains,& turn 1 of them upside down,& drill a hole for siphon break.

Is there a good source to purchase the overflows? I can make them but by the time I buy the materials and spend the hours making them, it would be easier buy them?

Im not sure if you can buy what you need, they will have to be built around the bulkheads. There was a thread here a week of so ago where a guy did what im talking about,It has a name, but i cant remember.Maybe someone will chime in that knows what im talking about.

I did something like for my first tank a 20g in my bed room. It made so much noise at first but then I tuned the external durso so it stop sounding like a toilet flush every couple minutes. After that most of the noise was from the water and bubbles sounds falling into sump.
It was ok for a 20g tank but I don't think it will work right in a 90g. Your return might be too fast for the external durso to work and will over flow your tank. Also cut some big teeth into the pipe inside so it skims the surface better and helps with the sound alot. You should use external or built in overflow. |
