Quieting Durso Pipes

I just finished setting up my 75 gal RR that came with the Marineland overflow pipe. It is blowing huge bubbles in my sump. What can I do to quiet it down? I did not have any guidance as to how long to make the pipe submerge in the sump, which may be the problem.

Any help would be great.

Is the noise problem the bubbles in the sump, or an air rushing sound atop the durso?

I do not have a problem with any noise at the top but where the pipe enters the sump sounds like a little kid blowing huge bubbles into the water.

Ah, well there are three ways to fix this. Raise the pipe so that part of the end is out of the water but most is under the water, allowing air to escape before creating big bubbles. Second, you can try and have the drain water cascade over an angled piece of plexi and/or glass and then down into the sump tank. Or third, upgrade your return pump so that it pushes more water down the Durso and offers less a chance of it to suck air in the first place.

I think they quiet down with time as well. Once they get a nice 'bio-film" in them it tends to quiet them. At least that's what happend with both of my tanks. When I set up my 180, both megaflow dursos sounded like bird whistles for about 2 weeks.

I have a Mag 9.5 on it and it is not set to full open, so I guess I can try pushing more through it.

is the pipe going from bulkhead to the sump straight or has a bend? and is it same size all the way down?

what I did is my pipe after bulkhead is L shaped and at the end of L is a -| t with top portion open and buttom open. The pipe that connects to original L should be significantly larger than original drain pipe, that makes water slow down and air escape up.

works for me

I was having the same problem and i eliminated any bends in the drain tubing and that solved the problem.
