Question Powerhead pre-filter use them?

If I understand correctly, sponges in filters are generally a bad idea. But what about for pre-filters on powerheads (prevent livestock loss?

Their okay to use, just be sure to keep it very clean. Daily cleaning would be better, but at least every few days or as needed. I try to leave on prefilter on my return, but take em off everything else.

just to clarify, it's not the sponges that are bad, it's the lack of maintance on a sponge that's bad. They'll trap loads of junk that will eventually dissolve and add to the nutrient levels in the tank, nitrates/phosphates/dissolved organics, stuff that worsens water quality. If you clean them often enough, it's not an issue.
