Are Tangs Jumpers?

Okay so currently I have a 135g tank full of water.
Just water havn't even mixed in the salt yet.

I am looking at a hood for the tank and the expert at my LFS sugested a light hood that will hang from my ceiling.

I have a HOB overflow box so he sugested the lights that hang from the lights because any other hood would require a special cut for the overflow box.

I was impressed with the lights he showed me and how well they amde his display tank so I wouldn't mind the kind he sugested but I wonder if anything I plan too keep are jumper fish who will jump to their death(or into the hands of my Persian cat, which would mean a terrable death).

Here is what i hope too keep for livestock.
If any of these are jumpers it may de-rail my previous plans.

Blond Naso Tang
Yellow Tang
Blue Tang(possible if blond tang isn't available)
Emperor Angel
Volitan Lionfish

I know the lionfish isn't a jumper, and in case anybody was going to ask I'll buying matured fish, then a juvenille lionfish to make sure he can't any of my precious tangs.

If any of these other fish are jumpers please let me know before I buy this hood!

You should find some kind of glass lid for your tank.
In my experience, tangs do jump. They don't do it often, but it has happened. As for the angel, I'm not sure.

I would not get a naso in a 135...they are a very very large fish...JMO.

Also I would suggest against a glass top, they tend to promote poor gas exchange and can cause your pH to drop among other things. If you really want to add a top look into the clear screen tops and possibly eggcrate. I use eggcrate on mine currently, but wouldnt mind a screen top.

What lights were they? And how much was he charging if I may ask.

tangs are not normally jumpers but they are very quick swimmers
who are used to open water and a quick start. There is always the possibility that if stressed very quickly that they ended up out of the tank.

good point
ditto for me--I was just going to add that--because of their size they may end up out of the tank by not being able to slow down quick enougu

Tangs and Angels usually are not jumpers unless they are not happy or are getting harass! But there is always an exception to that rule!

I would suggest looking into a custom made canopy, if your investing the money might as well do it right, get a couple good retrofit kits and a custom canopy and your set! least this way you lessen your jumper worries, Or even drain the tank and get it drilled and put a bulkhead in for your overflow then you can run a full canopy without fear of a jumper hitting the spot "Just right"

my six month old blue tang was obviously being harrassed by the clown and we found him two feet from the tank!

Agree, glass top is BAD

Pros:
Stops Fish from jumping

Cons:
Prevents high wavelengths to enter the tank
Poor oxygen exchange (prevents evaporation) leading to PH issue
Develops salt creep easy

IMHO--With an overflow box you should have good air exchange there. Looks like you are going for a FOWLR--for this you do not need special lights (IMO).

PS--you can always have a semi light cover--just through away the rear part of it, but those hanging lights are cool.

Most people have a cover on the overflow, also this does not address the issue of evaporation.

Thanks for all the great responces.

The tank is seckond hand, and its not tempered glass so taking it to be drilled is not a option.
I never thought to use eggcrate but I'll look into a clear screne first because esthetics play a part in my aquarium even though the overflow will take away from it somewhat.

Tanker is right this tank is FOWLR, the angel would eat many corals so no corals will be in this tank. My corals will go into my 65g diamond tank when thats up and operating.

I'm toled Naso Blond Tangs need bigger then 135g and then toled that they need 125min depends on the source. I plan on upgrading to a 220g or 300g in a year or two so if it needs a bigger tank I can suply it in time but I hope the 135g is enough for 12-24months.

Cheers

I agree 100%!

I wouldn't say they are jumpers but my tangs have jumped in excitement every once in a while when i feed. At least 2 times, my blue hippo has gone after the food so aggresively he "jumped" out and bounced off the bottom of my light fixture back into the tank.

As fast as they swim and accelerate, it's definitely possible that one could carpet surf if you have an open top.

Well they seem so nice and calm in the tank I wouldn't think they are jumpers but this is not somthing I'm willing to risk.
I'd rather not come home from work one day to find my expensive tang being eaten by my cat or even my dog!

So my greatest fear is having a $50-$100 tang jump then have their bones kill my $300 Persian Cat or my $2500 English Bulldog!

If the hood costs $500 and helps me sleep well at night I knwo it will be worth the investment!

cheers!
