Mantis Shrimp - Story/Questions
I originally posted this on the "New to the Hobby" forum and then I remebered there was this special interest forum.
OK I got up this morning a looked at my tank to see if I could find worm trails on my sand bed. I just added a DSB a few weeks ago w/ 40 lbs. of live rock that I had for six months. I added 15lbs. of live rock rubble from three different LFSs to add more life last week. When I looked I saw nothing on the sand, it hadn't changed much (other than water movement caused by powerheads) since I put it in. I left the room for ten minutes and came back in and looked again. There was this big long trail coming from one of the pod piles moving across the sand, stopping in a small patch of alga, then continuing across the entire tank to a large live rock. I thought, "That's a big trail for a worm?!" I left the room wondering what that could be leaving trails that big and decided to go back and investigate. I looked at the live rock and saw a mantis peeking out at me. It was a little exciting and horrifying at the same time. It looked like and alien! "Great, a mantis. How am I going to get this out on my tank?" I wondered. Then I remembered reading someone's post here about taking the rock out that the mantis was hiding in. Before the creature could get out of the rock and hide in another pod pile, I grabbed the rock out of the tank and plunked it into the sump. The rock and the little alien from planet ocean are sitting there now. I'm thinking about keeping it. I have an isolation tank I could hold it in until a get a smaller species tank for it. The rock is big and it knows how to hide in it though. How do I get the mantis out of the rock? How big of a tank would I need to hold a mantis? Any information would be very helpful right about now. Thanks! |
