I agree 100%. It is a pain, but well worth it.
I have a fish in QT right now, and am doing close to 50% wcs a day to keep ammonia down. Oh how bad I just want to put him in the DT.

tried anything like prime to keep ammonia down?

qt does suck but losing a few hundred worth of animals and tearing a tank apart sucks worse.

Yes. I use prime, but that doesn't remove it it just detoxifies it.

reefergeorge---if you run a small hob filter on the main tank for three days and move it to the qt tank it will have enough bacteria in the media to filter the qt tank--you won't need to make so many water changes

values of qt
help you get difficult fish to feed in a non stressful environment

help hyposalinate for ich

help keep diseases such as ich out of the main tank and affecting if not killing all your fish

help acclimatize small inverts like snails. LFS keep water for inverts sometimes as low as 1.018. Qt'ing them will help you bring up the salinity over 24 hours--something you can't do if they are in a bag.

to watch fish behaviour before adding them to the main tank
eg. test a butterfly fish to see if it is going to nip your expensive coral or perhaps train it to eat another food from day 1

I am not saying this as a negative--but you have to be careful on how many posts you read and then how you extrapolate the information.
This forum has 170,000 plus members and thousands of posts a day. That is great to have that kind of exposure but at the same time you have to realize you are just a little speck in that huge body of posting.
ie it could be a coincidence that you have read a number of posts by guys that don't believe in qt'ing. Does not mean that is the general coincidence or norm at all.

When you think you are starting to see a pattern or norm--start a thread with a poll---you will see a broader range of input

The other issue like this is using tap water---you may read five posts that say it is ok but I can assure that is not mainstream thinking or the norm on this site to advocate the use of tap water

mainly directed towards the "new to the hobby" forum. Seen quite few posts from the last few days of people going to the lfs and plopping fish straight to the tank. Going to be a really tough lesson to learn for some. Why go through all the steps and procedures to make sure everything is right only to skip the last one?
