Quarantine tank help?

I'm looking to set up a quarantine tank for my 130g display tank. I have never used a quarantine before. What are some key considerations for a quarantine tank. Mainly, how large & what equipment should be used as a minimum? I'm seeing lots of nanos for sale?? 12g, 24g etc.. What should I buy for this?

Thanks!

If you are just quarantining small fish, a 10gal with a sponge filter would be just fine as long as you keep up with water changes. if your quarantining larger fish and corals then I think a 29 gal would be perfect. there cheap and still manageable. a hang on filter would be fine just change the filter every week or two or if you have to treat with medication

An effective QT doesn't have to be expensive and will work fine with nothing other than the basics.

The size of the QT depends on how large and how many fish. A simple $10 ten gallon tank found at any Petco/Petsmart works fine for one or two small fish ... larger fish or more fish require a larger tank.

My QT consist of a ten gallon tank .. a $10 HOB filter ... a small heater and various PVC pipes which I will place in the tank for shelter for the fish. I use a barebottom tank where I paint the outside bottom of the tank white (helps me spot fish debris and uneatened food which I syphon out with a turkey baster). Sometimes I will add a small powerhead for additional water circulation (one of the old ones I use when making SW).

I use a nearby desk lamp for lighting.

I use those inexpensive foam filter sponges in my HOB filter - I keep several in my sump where they accumulate beneficial bacteria and when I place them in the HOB I have "instant cycled tank".

Here's a link discussing QTing ... guy uses hypo and is a clownfish breeder.

Hope this helps.
