Non-jumping sand sifter?

I've always been partial to diamond gobies, but they are partial to jumping arent they?

Is this because they get spooked and jump, or they just jump?

The only other fish that I know of that does as good of a sand sifting job as a diamond is a Dragon Goby.

Are these prone to jumping?

I'd prefer the diamond over the dragon as far as looks, but I'm going open top next time around and want to plan accordingly.

Any other super sifters out there that don't jump?

I have one of these and he does very well. I've never seen him even travel close to halfway up my tank.

just put some eggcrate over the top of the tank you can even paint it black.............otherwise i recommend none goby sand sifters or maybe a pair of blue-banded gobies depending on tank size they dont jump

That may be one of my favorite gobies. I was unaware they are good sifters.

The tank I am planning is going to be 36x36, are they a large enough work horse to do this size real estate?

It does say right on that website that they are prone to jumping.

So it's a toss up. But I would prefer that one over the rest based on their pink spots.

realistically it comes down to the fish itself. in my case, i've never had a problem in a 125. as far as getting him strictly for sand sifting, mine has his own area he pretty much sticks to.

My diamond goby jumped right through my egg crate. I think i'm going to build a window screen frame to put on top and then try again.

Good luck.

I got one 2 days ago. I had to fish him out of my overflow 2x... . I got him out of the sump... on the 2nd time I had not seen him. UNTIL. I was snooping around about 15min. ago and who do I find with a nice borrow on the very back side of my tank. Mr. Diamond Goby himself. He's not small either about 5.5"... woohoo nice 30.00 save. For now anyways.

See if the pink spot doesn't do the whole tank, I'm not intersted.

I think for work horse purposes & being a non-jumper

the Dragon goby wins.

I have 4 Ladder glider goby's -- they seem to be perfect for sand sifting. they tend to stand on their fins and just take in sand by the mouthfuls and toss em out thru their gills.

I have a res spot and it has never jumped. It does stay to his own area though. Personally I use sand sifting starfish. They do a really efficient job.

I have a pink spotted goby, and he doesn't sift the sand at all. Okay, he takes a mouthful of sand every once in a while, but he doesn't sift. LiveAquaria lists them under shrimp gobies: http://liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=1852, though mine doesn't seem to bond with my postol shrimp either. Come to think of it, he's mostly just a grumpy fish.

I have lost a diamond goby who jumped through my egg-crate. I think another one jumped too, though I never found the body (though I do have a dog and a cat).

Diamonds jump when they get spooked. I have a covered tank, and I still had to build a barrier around my overflow, to keep this Gobie from jumping out (PITA).

I have also owned a Dragon Gobie. Much more laid back than the diamond, and does a descent job keeping the sand clean. However, this is a pretty messy fish. Mine was always keeping a fine layer of sand over the lower portion (6" - 8") of my rock structure.
