Using fresh spring water for saltwater tank - initial setup
instead of using tap water would i be able to use water from a fresh spring instead of using RO/DI water? Does it have any of the other chemicals and even so would it be able to be balanced out through filtration?

Why people use RO/DI (or distilled) is because they are sure that it is pure water. Any other source would need to be tested (i.e. not all spring water is the same).

LOL Fresh Spring Water LOL I am in the water business and believe me there is no such thing as Fresh and Spring in water LOL That water is a body of water just like any other in North America.
Unless you live in a land far far away in a time long long ago with unicorns and fairies flying around you need an RO for yourself to drink and an RO/DI for your tank. Sorry man but unless you found the youth fountain, I wouldn't use it.

yes distilled is water that is boiled, then the steam which rises goes into a seperate tank where it will condense and turn back into water. This is very pure as well although oxygen depleted.
RO/DI is just as pure but will not remove the oxygen from the water. Plus RO/DI is somethign that you can easily buy and maintain in your home. A distiller will use lots and lots of hydro and be more difficult to maintain. Go with the RO/DI, I'm in Canada so I can't sell you one but there are some american dealers on here.

Underground (spring) water travels through so much rock strata that the TDS are extremly high.
There is also no legal difference between spring water and mineral water. This water should not be used in a reef system. |

Good RO/DI is superior to distilled. Distilled water can still contain volatiles that deionization removes.
Spring water is normally high in minerals, thats what makes it taste so good! |

Its still the best to test the TDS in the water. You can get a good TDS meter....COM-100 for $50.00 from the filter guys.... Its well worth the money. www.thefilterguys.com
