ID please
I found this washed up on shore when I was in the Florida Keys. It must have been out of the water for a few hours. It was about 5 ft from the water's edge. I thought it was a purple colored sponge, because at the time no polyps were visible. I threw it in a bucket with sea water in it and to my surprise later that day a few polyps emerged. It's been in my tank for about a week now and seems to be doing fine. Tough little thing! I've looked online to try and ID it, but I'm still not sure. I'm not sure how much light it should get or if I need to feed every polyp or how much flow is best. The first couple of days in the tank it retracted it's polyps when the lights were on, but now they're open all day.
It's about 5 inches long and looks like it grew over a stick. The polyps are rusty/purple color. [IMG] ![]() [IMG] ![]() [IMG] ![]() Thanks for looking! Last edited by seafansar; 03/25/2008 at 02:53 PM. |

I think it's corky sea finger, briarium asbestinum.

Thanks! I thought it looked like a corky sea finger (apparently called many names). So it needs hight light and strong flow? One website said that and another said it's not photosynthetic.

It is photosynthetic, though they are extremely adaptable IME. Strong light and strong flow would do it best, but Ive kept them under fairly low light/flow and had it do reasonably well. Its a very fast, aggressive grower, so dont put it next to anything you dont want it to overtake.
