Yes it's safe. We had this discussion about a month ago. It's basically tap water. I use my waste water for tea, coffee & f/w tanks. I'm not dead yet...

Someone from one of the RO companies said the waste water could have very high levels of flouride and he recommends not drinking it. I'm not a doctor I wouldn't know but thats what I was told.

It has passed trough a sediment or particulate filter and carbon so from that standpoint it is similar to a Britta or Pur filter. The problem is since it carries the reject away from the RO membrane it will be harder and about 20 to 25% or more higher in TDS than the tap water was to begin with. This is somewhat dependent of what you have your waster ratio set at. The lower your waste the higher the waste TDS concentrate.
I run my new MaxCap UHE system at 1:2 or 1 gallon of waste for every 2 gallons of good (67% recovery) and my tap water TDS is between 600 and 800 so my waste TDS is more like 1800 or higher so I obviously do not want to drink it or put it in my swimming pool!
With a tap water TDS of 250 which is about average and a normal 4:1 waste ratio you should see a waste TDS of 300 to 325 or so.

I guess it would depend on how safe your tap water is.. haha

hmmm..... how do you set your waste water ratio? I don't think I can do that on mine?

The waste ratio can be set with either a capillary tube type flow restrictor trimmed to fit your exact conditions or an adjustable needle valve type restrictor or a combination of both which is what I have for precise control.

My RO is in the laundry room. I run the waste water into the washing machine sometimes so that it isn't completely wasted. Not sure I'd drink it though

I run my into the lawn. I don't think I would drink anything with the word waste in it though. I don't think it would be unsafe, but why do it?

Depending on your tap source, some waste water is cleaner than other peoples tap!!

My waste water is lower in TDS than many bottled waters. I think a good Carbon block improves your water quality a lot VOCs TOCs...

I suggest for people in In our area (with low tDS tap water) tee into there RODI just after the prefilters. That way they don't need a pressure tank...
