The foam prefilter has two functions:

1. To prevent livestock (snails, fish, etc.) from being sucked into the pump
2. To prevent small particulates from being sucked in and clogging the Remora spray injector( the spray injector easily clogs and skimmer efficiency drops)

I would leave it on.

Run the skimmer with the prefilter box and within two days it should be broken in and you should produce skimmate and adjust the collection cup to the desired thickness of skimmate to produce the thicker skimmate. When the skimmate decreases to produce clean the injector with the brush that is usually provided(approx every 45 days)
