I had brown on mine and it really started to bloom after switching from fresh water lights to aquarium lighting.

I was told to keep the light off for three days and the stuff I use is by API "ALGAEFIX" it takes care of brown, green and red algae

It is called on the bottle Aquarium Algaecide.
The bottle states it will not harm marine fish, corals or other invertibrates.

Fish stores(I went to 5 of them) they all say use the bottle or a bunch of snails.

You will compound the issue if you scrape it off and just letting the filter suck it up...... I did that and next morning everything was brown! ewww.

My tank is 80% better and this algae attack was just 4 days ago.

The solution to tank pollution is dilution!

Water changes, siphon sand with python or other siphon device, consider increasing flow in tank.

Also consider decreasing tank lighting times.
