Requesting advice on how to sell/how much to ask for a 120g acrylic tank...
Hello all,
I hope I'm posting in the right place. If not, I would appreciate it if someone directs me to the appropriate forum. The short version of this post is basically: I have a large tank (by some peoples standards) that is sitting in my parents house. And being that I haven't lived there for the past several years, they want it out. The LONG version is: about 5-6 years ago, I attempted to upgrade my 65 reef to a pretty decent 120 gallon. Almost immediately after I finished plumbing the tank, I took a job in boston, and subsequently broke down my old reef and gave my corals away to friends. Sadly my clam died, and now sits in my car as a change holder. Anyway, after boston I moved out to the pacific northwest and have been living on an island where reef-keeping enthusiasts are few and far between. I'm going to be starting graduate school soon, and my parents, finally realizing that I will most likely not come home to reclaim this tank for several more years have politely asked to get rid of it. now. I'll be honest, and say that I have no idea what a fair asking price of this setup is - which is the primary reason for this post. Ideally I'd like approximately the amount I spent on it, which I realize is unlikely being that the value of fish tanks depreciate faster than cars. whatever. SO this is what I gots: Tank: 120 Gallon reef-ready Clarity-Plus Acrylic with stand/sump. Lights: 2 125W MH with ballasts and 2 48in 96W VHO with Icecap ballasts. Skimmer: Tunze - not sure what model AND the pump doesn't work. It didn't work when I got it. Pumps: 2 Magdrive 500gph return pumps Misc: 2 Seaswirl rotating returns several fancy timers, surge protectors, etc crushed coral and not-so-live sand **I have recently noticed, however, that the seam is starting to separate on the back right side of the tank. So yea, I'm sure that affects the value of the tank substantially - In case anyone was curious, the stand and canopy come in a fetching black I would really appreciate any advice/feedback. Thanks again for your time guys and please let me know if there is anything else I forgot to mention. -km |

km - typically if everything is in good working order, you'll get .50 on the dollar. However, the older items are, or in the case of a seam giving way, you'll have trouble unloading it even free.
You'll have to sell it on Craig's List or Ebay, because on Reef Central you need to be an active member (90 days and 50 posts) before you can sell anything. I'm surprised this is your very first post on RC, considering your 10 years in the hobby. Regardless, To Reef Central |

i honestly dont know for sure, what do you have in it. i would honestly be suprised if you got anywhere close to what you would want maybe $500? you might be better off parting it out, selling the lights, and the timers, tank, ect. separately.

Thanks for the advice melev and downhillbiker - I figured Craigslist is probably my best option. I was thinking that if I couldn't get around 500 for the setup it might be worth pitching the tank and saving the lights and such for when I'm in a position to set up a new tank.
And as ignorant as this sounds, I never knew a forum like this existed until it was suggested to me from a friend. Go figure. Thanks for the welcome! How does this sound for a Craigslist add: Soon to be broke graduate student wishes to sell large, "functionally-challenged" aquarium to appease aggravated parents. All proceeds will go to providing said student with sustenance other than easy-mac and eggs for the next several years. -I'm going for the "blatantly honestly" approach if you couldn't tell km |

I think that's a great approach. Good luck making some hot dog money.
