plenium with crushed coral
Anyone every use a plenium with crushed coral? I think i have seen one thread on it here and i just wanted to know how they work. I am dealing with high nitrates and am curently in the process of making a sulphur denitrifer and i am going to be moving the tank down to the lower lever of the house so i wanted to do a few changes to the 125 gal tank. Thanks!

Plenums need be below a deep bed of fine sand to work correctly-- they need the low oxygen zone created by being beneath a deep bed of dense fine sand. Even then they have been shown to not be necessary if you have a deep sand bed, as the same anoxic conditions are created without a plenum.
Your problem is probably related more to the crushed coral than the absence of a plenum. Adding more live rock would probably provide the same benefit with less trauma to the system than replacing the substrate.
