Live Sand/rock

Hi,

I am looking to seed my 180 with some live sand (have about 3 to 4 inches in main tank and looking to add 6" in refugium). Can someone recommend a good place to purchase live sand/ live rock? Does the live rock have to be supported above the live sand? The refugium I have (TruVu) 90gal that has a egg crate section (I think its a older model),is that section for floss or some type of filter media? Does anyone have this model? I am not sure how it to setup it up. I would to find someone that has the oceanic 180 bow front ? It has this canopy that is very hard to take on and off and was wondering if there was a diy for a hinge assy'? Pictures would be great of a 180 oceanic setup!!

Thanks for any help
Ed

If you are looking to seed your sand you will only need a cup or two from your Local Fish Store's tanks... Don't waste your money purchasing bags labeled "Live Sand"

Here's what I'm talking about, I just seeded my 90 gallon with a cup of sand from my established 55gallon tank.

If you post a picture of the sump... there are a ton of experienced reefers on here who can walk you through it

I use LiveAquaria for fish and shrimp... but I'm still browsing to try and figure out where to get my cleanup crew from.

Here's the sites I've been browsing:

www.liveaquaria.com
www.marinedepotlive.com
www.saltwaterfish.com

One more quick question... Is this stuff ok to use?

"Onyx Sand is a great way to make a statement Pitch-black, sparkling sand, completely safe for fresh and salt water. This sand does have a slight buffering capacity, as well. All natural, no artificial coatings. Ideally suited to planted aquaria and most effective when used alone. However it may be mixed with other gravel to make a completely unique aquascape. "

The kids want to make a black strip in the sand.

Thanks
Ed

its ok to use Ed, but for decoration purposes--it doesn't do anything else like it reports to do

Also buying sand online is not cost effective.

I bought nine 30lb bags online and it was way cheaper then I could have gotten at any of the LFS in my area. That included shipping too.

Same here

drs foster and smith do not charge the extra "added handling" charge that most online retailers add when ordering sand, LR, or Salt Mix... which made it extremely "cost effective"

Refugium How to ????

Hi

I have this Refugium and have No idea how to hook (plum) it to my main tank (which way the water flows thru it). It is a TruVu. I had called the company and they were no help (just wanted to sell a new one). Anyway I think the water flow comes in at the left side (I think a protein skimmer goes in there)and then water flows goes down thru egg crate (should I place some floss or sponge there?) I will have live sand in the middle section..but there is only one divider on the right! That's where a hole is drilled on the bottom right side. What keeps the sand from going into the pump? Should I install another baffle?

Just can't wait to install this to get some water in tank!!

Thanks
Ed

Here's my initial thought with this type of setup.

The ball valve only comes in to play if your return pump is too strong, and it will divert excess water into the refugium.

Thanks for the help.
One question (maybe 2) ... is the green pipe (in drawing) the return line to main tank and red one from tank? How would the edd-crate baffle keep sand out of pump? Sorry I am a little slow.

Ed

You're correct. Green is to tank... Red from tank.

The eggcrate won't keep sand out of the pump. from your original picture it looks like there is a small wall in place already, behind where I drew the eggcrate. I would make my sand bed almost as high as this wall, but not completely to the top... for obvious reasons.

It will just be easier to keep the eggcrate in place if it extends the whole way into the sand.
