closed loop
Back in the hobby after 20 years. I would like to start a 90g tank with 3 standpipes and a 5 pipe closed loop powered off the main pump for water return. I would controll water flow with 4 electronic irrigation valves ran off of a timer for random flow. (home depot parts) All 8 holes will be drilled. 4 of the 5 closed loop pipes will have eductos, all 5 will have shutoff valves and the main feed line will have a check valve. good idea/bad?

I don't know how well the irrigation valves will work for this application. You may want to look into an oceans motions 4-way or something like that that is designed for the flow required. I myself looked into the irrigation valves for the same application and ultimately decided against it because of the questionable metal parts in the valves as well as the chance of failure due to the constant switching on/off of the valves.
I do however use a system utilizing irrigation valves for my auto top off. Search oceans motions and talk to paul about your closed loop circulation, he was very helpfull when I set up my system.
