ReefDepot Fully Cured Live Rock?
Okay, so ReefDepot is now selling fully cured live rock for 4 bucks a pound.. This sounds like a great deal.. I already have about 140 lbs of fully cured live rock in the tank, and i want about 100-150 lbs more. Can anyone give me some info? Is the live rock REALLY fully cured? How long will it be until im able to add fish after I add the "fully cured live rock?
Thanks, Kevin |

by the time they mail it to you it won't be fully cured any more. Some stuff will die in transit.

i agree the rock may be fully cured at their store but after shipping you will again need to re cure it in a seperate container before adding it to the main tank.

I never understood why people paid extra for cured LR online when by the time they get it it is no longer cured . Try your local fish store and buy their cured LR.

Anyways...does anyone know how long the curing process would be if i were to get the fully cured live rock (yes i know that some die off will occur).

and also... if i take about a 45-1 hr drive into NY i can get uncured live rock for 5 bucks a pound.. thats why im wondering if i bought "fully cured live rock" online for a cheaper price would the curing process be faster, as well as cheaper?

Be prepared for the curing process of the 'cured' rock to take as long as the uncured rock. It might be faster but I would either make the drive to the LFS or try to get it from another reefer in your local forum.

Another option is to get some base rock (usually $1 to $3 a pound) and seed it with some live rock you already have. Cure it in an external rubbermaid until it becomes live. This may take a little longer but you will save money.

Any rock that you get online is going to have to be cured, there will be die off in transit. I would plan on it taking a month to fully cycle/cure, but it could take less then that -- you never know.
I have gotten rock online before and had really good results, but I let it re-cure in rubbermaid bins. If you want to this route, only you can decide if it is worth it -- factor in what you can get locally, and how much it would cost -- factoring shipping. And if you have any concerns about ordering from Reef Depot, I wouldn't have any. I am lucky enough to be about 10 minutes from there and have gotten a lot of great corals. Each time I am there ends up being about an hour long stay, just hanging out and talking to Mark about reefs and what not.

Good news... I'm probably gonna be buying about 70-80 lbs from CTfishstore (which I had no idea was a website before today) for 250 bucks... not bad.. thats like 3.25 per lb... and its fully cured. SWEET... now i need about 70-80 more though :/
