Smile Live rock color question

Hi!

I had a LFS tell me that all rock goes to a purple color eventually. Is that true???? Are there different color live rocks out there?

If they mean that it should eventually get covered by coralline algae, then yes, that's true.

Coralline comes in all different colours but purple seems to be the most prevalent.

He could have also been hinting at the fact that even dead rock will eventually become live rock as well.

Right now I have more purple coralline on my snails and hermits than I do on my rocks.

How long does it take to get covered by coralline algae?

My rock is all live and has some coloring in it (purpe) and some is growing on the back of my tank. Maybe I'm just odd and wondering if I can have more than just purple in my tank.

Its hard to say how fast it'll grow. It all depends on how good your water parameters are, and what you have for lighting. It might take a few months, or you may never get any growth. Coralline algae does come in different colors, but purple is the most common. I think the different colors require different lighting needs and will probably grow on different sides of the rock. I've seen orange on the sides of rocks before, but not too often. And coraline is not restricted to rocks. It'll grow on the glass (where the glass might be scratched), on powerheads, heaters, shells, etc.

in my tank i have green, orange, brown, purple, grey, and a bit of pink coralline. I am hoping that the pink takes over and covers all the rocks because it looks lovely.
