toadstool troubles??
I added a brown toadstool to my aquarium 10 days ago. Initially, it was tall, fully open, with polyps extended. Today, the polyps are still extended but it is slumped over and looks a bit closed up. Nothing has really changed. Levels are: Cal-420, dKH-9, PH. 8.06, Sp G. 1.0253, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 2ppm, Phos- .05. Levels are stable. It is at the bottom of the aquarium with 130 Watts of PC in a 54 gallon tank. Is this normal behavior for a toadstool, any ideas. I can post pictures later...
Thanks

If a leather gets stressed it will release a toxin that in a 10 gallon would probly kill itself, if you refer to the soft coral forum you will find endless posts about ailing leathers.

Mine used to do that all the time, until I directed a bit more flow towards it. Try re-aiming a power head, or placing where there is a bit more flow.

thanks guys, I'm new to reefing so I really don't know what "normal" behavior is for these.

Mine does the same thing. Sometimes there are days that it is fully extended and huge. Other days it will be less extended or not extended at all. They are pretty hardy and should be back to normal within a few days.

Sacrophyton (toadstools) shed monthly or so. The polyps retract and the coral looks shriveled. Flow helps it shed. The shed skin can be toxic to other corals. Good flow will hep it shed and disperse the shed material. Check the whitish spot in the front. If it is mushy or if there is a mushy spot elsewhere your coral is infected and the mush should be cut out outsid of the tank.
