bugs that eat digitadas....

Hey everyone,

We've had 2 monti digi frags for about 7 weeks now, for the first 4 weeks they looked awesome, nice red color to them and full polyp extension during most of the day and night.

the last few weeks they've been very slowly deteriorating, no polyp extension on either frags and the skin is fading away, nothing has changed in water chemistry.

One of the frags fell down last ngiht and this morning when picking it up to put back, we noticed a bunch of little bugs crawling on it. they didn't look like the normal pods running around the LR at night. they looked more like little fleas. Wondering if anyone has any pics or names for us to research.

Thanks.

Might be "Red Bug" or AFI can't remember what that stands for. There are bugs that eat SPS coral.

Red bugs do not eat montiporas. They eat acropora. You may have some montipora nudibranches. You should post this question on the SPS forum. You may also have flatworms but I am unsure if they eat montiporas or not.

Strange how you mention this.I've done a search for the same answer.I have a digitata in a QT tank that has what appears to be smal white pods on it constantly.A fellow reefer gave it to me as it was deteriorating in his tank due to lighting. This QT tank has a small pod population as I has a ball of chaeto in there for a while.Perhaps it's just coincedence that pods like to hang out on bleached digitata.

for sure its not nudibranches, I jsut looked with a flashlight tonight and saw a bunch of pods (probably 5-6 on a 2" frag) on both monti frags but also on the acro frag and the acro has been doing very well no signs of stn or irritation.

but there are very tiny snails on the montis, on the skin and on the skeleton. could these possibly be eating them???

Yes, they do go after digitata.
Your coral may have some sort of infection from prior stress and the podlike creatures you see may be feeding on sick tissue or the patenogen? Who knows.? But I have not heard of small pod like creatures eating montipora. In any case a lugol's dip might be helpful.
