Noobie Q's about FO tank

I've been in the hobby for about 3 months with a FOWLER. Now my brother wants to start his own tank at work, I also work there. He wants a fish only tank, with out the liverocks, is that possible? He will have about 40lbs of livesand, a canister filter, and skimmer, is that enough filtration? Another question, will he go through a cycle? If so can I seed the bacteria with a cup of sand from my current tank? Forgot to mention he has a 40g oceanic cube tank.

the cycle will be minimal if at all. Make sure you use live sand and don't overload the tank and stay on top of water changes and you should be fine.

The benefits of live rock are so great that it is not recommended to go without it.

I agree with Brandon. It'll do a lot for the health of the tank and fish (not to mention appearance) to spring for at least a couple of live rocks for the decor. Otherwise you have fish doing laps around a sterile looking wasteland....kinda pathetic looking.
