2 dual overflows overkill

ive gotta 125 sps tank w/ 2 dual overflows rated at 1200gph each. the problem is that w/ all the piping i have to connect to my sump even if i put a siphon break whole if i cut the system off or if my pump stops up i get a mess. can i downgrade to just one overflow and be ok?

Is your sump a long way from your display? Are you running 2 seperate drains all the way to the sump? I'm guessing you have a bunch of water volume in your plumbing and its causing the trouble. You might try tieing both drains together just under the tank with a Y or tee fitting and running a single drain. The thing to remember is the overflows will only flow what the return pump will supply the tank, so at best with headloss you are no where near the limit of even one overflow. The one thing i can think of is you would end up with stagnant water in the un-used overflow, because it would fill to tank level and sit there.

Say you have 5' head you're around 750gph. Well it seems your drains even one, can handle your pump. Check flow for your setup with the RC calculator.

Can also consider bigger sump or can you run you current sump at a lower level.

I sort of have the same thing, 2 2" drains all the way back to a basement sump (I run my 75g sump at ~40g)

IMO, yes its overkill. A few things.

Unless they are Lifereefs, I highly doubt they will actually flow 1200 GPH each.

You dont need 2400 GPH of overflow capacity even if they could do that.

Each U Tube needs ~ 200 GPH of flow to keep bubbles clear. That is 800 GPH, which a Mag 9.5 will not deliver.

I would run a single overflow. It will be fine for that setup.
