Very much a carnivore. Shrimp, maybe squid, mysis. Probably should not be in a cycling tank.

they are fairly hardy as far as eels go, heres a bit of info on them,

http://www.aquariumfish.net/catalog_...eels_moray.htm

they like chunks of shrimp, krill, mysis brine, ghost shrimp, almost anything.

The guy that gave him to me said he was going to throw him in the garbage, I just couldent let that happen, what would be your advice on trying to get him to survive?

Is your tank cycled? read up on eels, this specific kind likes to eat things with shells and may get nippy with smaller fish during feeding time. For the most part this is an easy eel to care for just make sure it is compatible with what you have/want.

GL!

yeah i would never advise someone to leave it in a cycling tank, if that is the only place you have for him he will PROBABLY be ok they are fairly hardy, you could move him to a Quarantine tank if you have one set up.

Is this a completely new setup or did you just buy some live rock to add to an established tank?

Throw the eel in the garbage? I hate doing that with dead fish lol, let alone a living one. That's terrible!

If you dont want him you could take him to your LFS and probably get some store credit for him, i cant imagine anyone just wanting to throw him out, good job on saving him.

I had one in an aggressive tank he was cool, ate chunks of anything fishy. I put some raw pieces of lobster in one time he went nuts, actually nipped my finger in his frenzy, I had him halfway out before we both realized the awkward moment.

some people prefer bare bottom, some go with sand, what kind of filtration/skimming do you have?

I have a cheapo odyssea Skimmer, a couple of powerheads, and a few other accy. I have a 1 1\2 inch "dead" sand bed, I was planning on adding a layer of live sand on top before the rock but I couldent pass it up! I got 100lb of live rock a powerhead and the eel for $120. So Should I still try to add live sand or let the rock do its thing and turn my sand "live"?

Are you on good terms with a LFS? If so ask them if they'll hold the eel for you til your tank is cycled. However, if the rock is from an established tank the cycle should be pretty mild and the eel might be fine. That is if you want to keep him... I've never liked eels in reef tanks, places to many limitations on tank mates and they add a prouduce a good amount of waste considering how they need to be fed.
