Necessary for what? It might be for some high light corals or very deep tanks.

OMG that's a fixture and a half! 4x400W with 12x54W T5? That's astonishing, I didn't know anyone even made something that powerful.
It may not be necessary (even the most light-loving corals will do well with FAR less light), but for someone like me who LOVES a bright tank, that fixture is the stuff of dreams.
