kalk auto topoff VS 2 parts
Which method would you go with for better SPS color + stable calcium/alk/PH?
I think I heard somewhere that 2parts method is better for sps coloration. Is it true? I am thinking about switching my auto topoff (via aqualifter) with kalk (1tsp=1.5tsp). Evaporation rate is around a gallon a day. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Joe |

Might try asking in the Chemistry Forum.

Both kalkwasser and 2 part systems are to raise calcium and alkalinity in balance so one is not really different than other in result, I dont think that one would cause better coloration (unless the the kalk or 2 part contains other items). The disadvantage of kalk is that it might be hard to raise ca and alk enough if you have too many hard corals and the maximum dosage depends on your evaporation rate. The disadvantage of 2 part is it might cost too much if your demand is high.

there is a flaw in your POll...i used to use both before i got a Ca reactor. now i use kalk and a Ca reactor. but if you are just starting out with Stony's i would suggest to use a kalk auto top off. very easy and you dont need to remember to dose it. but eventually kalk will not be enough to sustain even small colonies of stony corals and you will need to dose. i dont believe there really is a relationship to dosing and coloration. the trick to coloration would be stainability in parameters not only Ca and Alk but keeping other near 0 like trates and phates. as well as good lighting and great flow. these all comprise to produce coloration of corals.
