Sound ID
75 gal
266w pc Amm 0 Ni 0 Na 0 Ph8.0-.1 temp 80 Gravity 1.23-.24 OK the question What can cause an audible clicking sound in my tank i have ~80 lbs LR and it was nearly all base and had little of anything on it so i am VERY doubtful of a mantis. In the tank now is a diamond and yellow watchman goby. 1 peppermint shrimp, 1 cleaner shrimp assorted snails and hermits and a GBTA. I have seen no crushed shells and i dont have any missing turbos. What is capable of making a audible clicking sound? Its not a huge click but it is enough to hear while sitting in my living room with the tank.

When you say "Base rock" do you mean dry rock, or was it cured LR? If it wasn't dry, it can still be a mantis. There are other crabs that can make the clicking noise, but a mantis is more likely.

It was cured LR from 2 different places one was VERY base rock so much i think i was had cuz it was basically just wet rock but whatever. The other was from a salt water specialty store and it had some junk on it some small feather duster worms and bristle worms and a little aptaisa GRRRR so i am not saying its impossible but improbable. The tank have been up for about 2 months and i just started hearing it maybe 4 days ago last LR that was not a frag was added a min of a month ago. Could something had hatched?

It was my understanding that to hear a pistol it would have to be a sizable one to hear him also i have seen no new burrows my diamond kicks up a stand storm now and again and builds a home so something could have moved it and i would not a have known

Mantis or pistol shrimp just curl up deep in a hole. Once back in a tank they move about (usually after lights out) looking for food. If you think you know the area where the noise is coming from, put some food in a jar/glass or on a hook and place in the area, then watch. You may be able to draw what ever it is out in the open to see exactly what it is.

If its a mantis ill eat it!
are mantis and pistol the only critters that a able to produce an audible clicking sound. It just happens now and again not often and i guess its is at night. It just caught my attention a couple days ago and i have been out for a day so i have now had a close ear on the tank.

Pistol shrimp don't have to be big to hear them. I can clearly hear the 1 inch one in a friends tank.
Do you have a lot of snails? I've been hearing clicking, cause one snail will crawl onto another. The first one wants the other off and shakes its shell. If they are by the glass or on the glass, I hear click.....click.....click. Just a thought.

I have an electric blue hermit that will create a "clicking" sound when it's crawling along the glass.

It's probably a shrimp, but just so you don't overlook the obvious...Turbo snails and even trochids and nerites will clamp down against the glass when something comes near, and you may hear a click. It's not as loud as a mantis, but it took me a while to figure out where the clicks were coming from after I'd removed the mantis from my tank. It was the snails.

I had two small one inch pistols that were very audible. They were both loners (which not all pistol's are comensal). I had the rock for over a year and never noticed it, I always saw the hermits, and snails bumping the glass, so I assumed it was nothing. When I did locate one (he was green) he was in a rock that anytime something slept in it or hid in it they would come up missing(hum..). Then the other one was very tiny and the loudest of the two, and he was clear(from the gulf I read) and he was in a Christmas tree worm rock. I hear clicking now and my rock is over 5 years old, and I haven't added anything in forever! These shrimp are very smart, and tricky. I also had a mantis that never made a sound, I didn't even know it was there until one day I was moving rocks around and out popped a mantis!EEK! Good luck! Many critters can hide out in your rocks for a long time without ever seeing them!
