overflow

i'm trying to get my tank closer to the wall. it did have a protein skimmer hanging off the top of the tank which causes it to be 7.5" away from wall. it is not drilled. could i use this Easy-to-install siphon overflow box
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...m?pcatid=18358

for a 150g i was thinking the pf-1000. and putting a sump under the tank stand. so it would be 3" away from the wall??

the flow rate is restricted to the lines which are one inch--so a gravity feed drain to a sump will give you a 600 gph flow rate

which is adequate flow through your sump area

40g should be ok.
The overflow is a U tube type. This type is much more reliable than the inaptly named continuous siphon types. It will not loose it's siphon if good flow is maintained and the tube and drains are kept free of excessive algae or livestock.. You may want to fashhion a cover for the in the tank side of the box as a blocker for snails/ anemones/fish any other drain blockers. The cover may also be used to block light to prevent excessive coraline growth in the box which in time can restrict flow.

Get the double for flow and if one tube for some odd reason should break siphon the other can cover . If it were my tank I would use two boxes on opposite sides of the back wall for good flow and safety.Don't forget to peek at them once aweek or so to make sure they are clean and flowing well.

Yes it will be just a little over 3" from the wall. I have an extra pf-1200 laying around that is brand new and I don't need if your interested in it I will make you a good deal on it. I love the eshopps boxes and that is all that I use. I use the pf-1200 on my 150 with a 30 gallon sump and it works great for me but a 40 gallon would be even better.

We're using the Slimline Model from LifeReef.com and it requires only 3" of clearance as well. They offer 600 gph and 1200 gph models.

U-Tube syphons are the only way to go.

the reason i want one of these is so i don't have to put my skimmer on the back of the tank. do you think i could just put the skimmer under the tank (using longer hoses), keeping it's pump in the water up top??

The skimmer may leak or on occassion overflow the collection cup. Yopu can plumb one in line but IMO it is much easier to use a sump than it is to rely on in line plumbing.
