Vortech vs. Tunze...Noise

So I am trying to cut down on the noise my tank produces and have decided one place to start is to remove the Maxi mods and Seio 2700 I have in the tank and replace them with high end wave pumps. I am leaning towards Vortechs as I can slowly replace one side of the tank with a pump then the other, but I want to know. Any of you out there using both which is quieter??

PS Wifey says if the tank doesn't quiet down I am going to have to switch to a freshwater Discus tank since they don't require all the extra "junk". So I am a bit motivated.

Tunze are near silent. Vortechs can get pretty noisy when in pulse mode.

I think the Tunze's are quieter because they are completely submerged in water. The Vortecs have the main motor outside, which causes them to make a little more noise.

Both are nice pumps. I opted for the Tunzes, and would do it again. But like I said, vortecs are nice. I've never owned a set, but a couple LFS and local hobbyists have them. They are audible and produce more heat IMO, but are much more appealing to the eye in the tank.

My tunzes (6000, 6060) were never all that quiet. Not real loud, but louder than maxijets and such.

Tunze pumps are very quiet. The vortechs are annoyingly loud, IMO.

Really? Louder than a maxi-jet (and such)?

Wow, once again, we totally disagree

They aren't loud, but my maxis are silent. The tunzes are audible. It may just be that I was running them in a smaller tank than most.

Could be. Or it could also be the models you were running (I have never ran them, so I cannot comment on how they sound).

Either way, experiences in this hobby vary

Having owned both 6100s and MP40Ws IME, there is no comparison. The Tunzes are quiet (not silent). The Vortechs were unacceptably loud. Loud enough that there was no way I could use them in my system.

i just got my vortech a few weeks ago. you can definitely hear it, but whether or not it's "loud" depends on the person. i personally found a "sweet spot" where the noise is not bad at all - as stated in the instructions you should nudge it a tiny bit in each direction to try and minimize the noise and vibration.

I'm buying a Tunze for the other side of my 120. The Vortech is annoyingly loud, louder than my wave box. The Vortech has some other drawbacks, having to replace parts annually, but the Vortech's flow is amazing.

If you can work it with the lady, I would get one of each as they produce different types of flow...and maybe you will roll double 7's on your vortech being silent. It seems 50/50 on people's experiences on the amount of noise they generate.

Personally I don't think the Tunze are worth the money, but if you're looking for a silent propeller-style pump I'd look into Hydor Koralias. I run 2- #4s on a 75g and they are dead silent. When I turn off the skimmer I literally cannot hear a thing from the tank. Also, Koralias are allow for placement almost anywhere in the tank and have a magnet holder included. Plus, the Koralias are a fraction of the price.

i have both vortechs and tunze, the tunze is silent, the vortech is loud. I placed the vortech on the back of the tank, and run at 1/2 power, and can still hear it. I never heard the tunze at full power.

I have a vortech and I can't hear it at all, and it's in our living room right beside our couch.

I think the single most important thing to get them quiet is paying careful attention in getting it aligned properly. When it wasn't aligned well, you could definitely hear it...

I have both 2 6080's and a vortech MP40W. The Vortech is kinda loud at 100% pulse mode, but on reef crest it is very quiet. I can hear the Tunze's at all, but I like the flow from the vortech better

I have owned several Tunze stream pumps, and all have been almost silent. I can only hear them ramp up once in awhile-and it is barely noticeable. I also owned a Vortech- the noise would have driven me nuts. Its the mechanical whirr of the motor, and I have heard the same noise on a few others.

same opinion~

I have both tunze and vortech and tunze is more quite than
vortech. Vortech noisy is hard to endure.

I asked Vortech company to change part to reduce noise but I am not sure it works.

But I love the vortech flow and looks than Tunze,

If the vortech noise will be quite as much as tunze, I will buy it
again..

I have a vortec and tunze 6100s. The tunze pumps are the quiter of the 2, and if you already have an annoyed spouse I would go tunze. My vortec is not loud, but there is a sound similar to that of a RC car motor.

Last month I purchased a couple of wireless Vortechs along with a couple of "quiet" 4" fans for cooling the T5 lighting.

When I purchased these, I was conerned about the noise from both. The fans are rated at 26db, the lowest I could find on the typical online stores. I also saw the posts about the Vortech noise.

Turns out the fans make a lot more noise that the Vortechs. I have looked around at replacing the fans, but for now I will control the on/off cycle with my AC3 controller.

The noise from the fans is a constant "white noise" and you just tune it out after a while. The Vortech's speed can vary, depending on the mode, and it's the ramping up that can make them more noticeable. But when I set the power at 2/3 I don't notice it in Reef Crest Mode.

I am sure I will eventualy be able to program a timer, hopefully the AC3, to control the times when the Vortech's at maximum.

So far I am very pleased with the Vortech's.

Thank you all for the excellent advise. I definitely appreciate those of you who have both and were willing to give me feedback. I honestly am leaning towards tunzes because of the your responses. Thanks again.
