how does everyone keep the top of there sandbed so clean...i dont get it !!!! help

I have a sand star and about 550 Nassarius snails.

Many ways from age ,type and amount of substrate and LR , amount of flow and feeding and stock to CUC and water maintance. Its all about a balance.

Mine is usually not very clean at all. But what I do want it to be clean (like when we have guests here for a few days) then I just lightly stir the top inch or so of the sand every day.

alright i dont have 300+ gallon tank so i cant have 550 nassarius snails but i will try and get a few and how would i get more flow down at the bottom

Mine is clean on the surface due to flow and some nassarius snails.

below about .5" to 1" its dirty and I like it that way because the bacteria and critters that keep everything going are there.
