Custom built fuge use samd or mud???

Hey everyone I am in the process of a custom built frag tank,sump and fuge. I will post pics soon but was curious on what the substrate should be. Mud or sand or both?

I started with mud (Miracle Mud) then switched to sand (Aragalive). I read that Miracle Mud has lots of heavy metals which we do not want in our reef tanks plus some found tree branches in their mixture so who knows if it really came from the ocean.
